City Council passed a bill to crack down on hit-and-run drivers Thursday, voting to create an alert system that will send out messages within 12 hours of a death or serious injury in such a crash.
The alerts will include details about the locations of incidents and cars involved to get the public to help catch hit-and-run drivers.
Last year, a deadly hit-and-run in East New York rocked the city after someone ran down Jean Paul Guerrero, better known as DJ Jinx Paul.
He is just one of many hit-and-run victims.
A grand jury indicted Kevin Ozorio, 28, in connection with the death just this month.
