Several city officials are making a push for an NYPD residency law.

The lawmakers, including Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), say that all officers should be required to live in one of the boroughs so that they would better understand and respect the city's racial and cultural diversity.

The proposal comes after harsh comments were allegedly posted by NYPD cops on Facebook about people who attend Brooklyn's West Indian Day Parade. The current law requires that officers live in the city or in one of its six surrounding counties.

The head of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association argues that residency requirements didn't work in the past and says the union will oppose it.
