Volunteers scoured the streets in January, counting the number of homeless people in the Bronx to determine the effectiveness of city programs.
According to the Department of Homeless Services, there are 164 homeless people living in the Bronx, which is down about two-thirds from 2005. Robert Hess, the commissioner of the Department of Homeless Services, says city agencies will work together to get even more people off the streets and into permanent housing.
According to the department, there are more city programs currently in development to help aid the transition from living on the streets to living in permanent housing. City officials hope these and other programs will help get all homeless people off the streets.
