City officials and hip-hop stars rode out to the genre's famed birthplace at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. Thursday for Global Hip-Hop Day and the official renaming of a section of the street to Hip Hop Boulevard.
Fat Joe, Remy Ma and Cardi B are among those who attended.
They say the music grew out of a Sedgwick Avenue basement and inspired a new culture.
They also spoke out against crime and drugs and said that for some people, hip-hop provides unity and community to avoid those things.
Some Bronx-native rappers are also pushing for a hip-hop museum to be built in the borough.
