New York City is planning to roll out mobile trauma units in 2019 that will help communities cope with tragedies.
The city designated a one-time, almost $2 million budget to the project.
The initiative plans to provide access to therapeutic, educational and other social service resources.
Council Member Vanessa Gibson told News 12 that the service is essential for families in the long recovery process that follows a loss.
"I don't think many New Yorkers realize, when the candles have stopped burning, when the media is gone, the aftermath and the trauma,” said Gibson.
The trucks will park themselves in the community that needs them the most. News 12 was told it hopes to bring a more holistic approach to healing, rather than a criminal justice one.
