New York City is planning to use housing subsidies to recruit teachers to some of the toughest Bronx and city schools.

A schools spokesman says the city will recruit math, science and special education teachers throughout the country. The teachers would get up to $5,000 to help pay for down payments or relocation costs. The city will then provide the teachers with $400 monthly subsidies for two years.

To qualify for the subsidies, teachers must be licensed to teach in their specialized areas. School officials say teachers must also have already taught in a specialized area for two years and must commit to teaching for at least three years in city schools. The city hopes to recruit 100 new teachers by June.
