City urging residents to stay safe during heat wave
Many Bronx residents can't wait for summer fun in the sun, but with scorching heat hitting the borough this week, the city is taking steps to make sure people stay safe while they are out and about.
The city opened cooling centers Wednesday at libraries, senior centers and community centers throughout the five boroughs.
New York City Emergency Management and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is also urging residents to wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and drink plenty of fluids, particularly water.
They are also advising residents to eat small, frequent meals and never leave children or pets in the car. They say it is also important to limit strenuous activity in the heat.
Health officials say that in recent years, there has been an estimated 102 heat-related deaths.
Health officials also advise to be aware of the warning signs of a heat stroke, which include dry skin, clammy skin, confusion, disorientation, nausea, vomiting, trouble breathing and an excessively rapid heartbeat.
