Performing arts and entertainment venues can begin to reopen their doors today.

They are allowed to reopen today with some capacity restrictions, though some spots like the Brooklyn Academy of Music will be starting out with outdoor performances for now.

After a year of being shut down, the arts community can operate at 33% capacity with a maximum capacity of 100 people indoors and 200 people outdoors.

Charlotte Cohen, executive director of the Brooklyn Arts Council, says it's an exciting day.

"I think that everyone in New York City is just aching to be together in some way and the arts bring us together," Cohen says." Performers, artists are anxious and enthusiastic about sharing their work with the public. It's what drives them, it makes them enthusiastic, and it brings joy."

Brooklyn Academy of Music says it will reopen with outdoor performances. They say their first live in-person event will be on April 6 and will be held at the Lefrak Center and not at the academy itself.

Social distancing and masks are required.

As for Broadway performances, the lights won't be coming back on quite yet because they say 33% capacity doesn't allow them to bring in enough money to match the cost of keeping a Broadway show up and running.

They say Broadway performances will return in the fall.
