Residents hoping to cool down in Claremont Pool walked away disappointed during this summer scorcher. The city pool was closed for the second day in a row on Tuesday.
A sign posted to the entrance says Claremont Pool was closed until at least 7:30 p.m., but staff on site told News 12 crews it won’t reopen until Wednesday.
NYC Parks said Monday that the shutdown was due to a water quality issue. It also told News 12 that the wading pool at Claremont Pool is closed because of lifeguard staffing issues.
According to the to the Parks Department’s website Tuesday afternoon, there are also closures at the Floating Pool at Barretto Point Park and the Mapes Park Pool. It comes on a day when city pools are staying open an extra hour, until 8 p.m., to provide relief from the extreme heat.
Neighbors who showed up at Claremont Park Tuesday expecting to take a dip were not happy to hear the pool wouldn’t be an option.
“I was up at 8 a.m.. It says it’s open. It was supposed to be closed and open back at 4 p.m.,” said Kay Jordan-Boddi, who was waiting to access Claremont Pool when she learned about the shutdown. “It’s hot. It’s too hot for this and the other one is too far.”
News 12 is still waiting for a response from NYC Parks about when Claremont Pool is expected to reopen.
