Dangerous road conditions in Claremont Village are making it difficult for bikers to safely travel through the area, according to residents who say a massive sinkhole is putting lives at risk.

The sinkhole, located at Webster Avenue and East 174th Street, has grown so large that trash has begun collecting inside it. Riders say the hole is especially dangerous at night when visibility is lower.

“At night it becomes even more difficult to see,” said Julio, a biker who rides through the area every day.

Julio said avoiding the sinkhole has become part of his daily routine and fears a rider who hits it could suffer serious injuries.

“I’m dead. There’s no surviving that,” he said. “You are just going to go down headfirst.”

Julio also worries that bikers may swerve suddenly to avoid the sinkhole, increasing the risk of crashes involving cars and other riders.

“God forbid you swerve and then the other car is going to swerve into another car and you might cause a big accident,” he said.

While says he understands the city faces many issues, Julio said the road hazard should be repaired before someone gets seriously hurt.
