Families at the Sack Wern Houses in Clason Point are claiming they have been without gas since March.
“This is the second time around that we had no gas,” said one resident.
Tenants claim the first time they were without gas was for 15 months during the height of the pandemic. This time, families say it's been three months since they’ve been able to use their stoves.
Hot plates and Crockpots were distributed back in March by housing management when the gas service was shut off by Con Edison after a leak was discovered.
A posted note in the building says a vendor inspected the gas lines yesterday, but tenants have not received any updates from the New York City Housing Authority at this time.
Community members say that a significant number of Sack Wern Houses tenants are senior citizens, making the lack of gas in the building even more dire.
Tenants complain that the service hiatus creates costly expenses.
“For a day, I spend close to $80 on food. This is way out of control,” said one tenant.
