Wednesday's 50-degree temperatures are a one-hit wonder across the borough as blustery conditions grow stronger and knock temperatures down tonight. A WIND ADVISORY is in effect through 10 p.m. this evening, with some gusts occasionally reaching 50 mph. Strong winds like that could lead to some isolated tree and/or power damage, as well as loose objects like decorations and trash bins being blown away. Temps in the 50s quickly turn to the 20s after midnight as the wind is an arctic wind, bringing down a quick cold shot for Thursday.
Low temps bottom out in the mid-20s Thursday morning but feeling even more frigid. With 35 mph gusts expected to linger through the morning commute, it will feel like the lower-to-middle teens at best.
Make sure to bundle up with the heavy-duty winter jackets and accessories. Lots of sunshine through the day Thursday will be ineffective as highs will be stuck in the 30s and feeling like freezing with 30 mph gusts. The sunshine will quickly be replaced by cloudy conditions Thursday night. As clouds roll in through the late-afternoon and evening, look up to the sky for a cool-looking phenomenon known as "gravity waves." These clouds will look like streaks or waves in the sky, caused by turbulence in the atmosphere caused by the fast-changing weather patterns from cold and sunny Thursday to warmer and rainy Friday. Speaking of rain, steady rain arrives just before 5 a.m. Friday morning, with a few rain showers likely during the Friday morning commute. After a brief midday break, rain returns, and could be heavier at times, just in time for the Friday evening commute.
A nearly all-day rain event is likely, which is much needed for the worsening drought situation. If it was not for this rainstorm on Friday, the last day of January, this January would have been the driest January ever recorded. It could still be top-ten, depending on exactly how much rain falls.
With a warmer storm track on Friday, this weekend's cold shot will be muted with highs in the upper 30s instead of below freezing. That could also unlock a significant warmup by the end of the weekend and early next week. If the weekend remains dry and the storm tracks farther to the north, 60 degrees is not out of the question Monday. Right now, expect lower 50s with a milder breeze. Check back for updates throughout the week on the potential for rain and warmer temperatures.
