The clock is ticking on a program that is aimed at reducing speeding in school zones across the Bronx and citywide.

There are two speed cameras on Riverdale Avenue as cars approach P.S. 81. Drivers who exceed the 25 mph speed limit during school face being issued speeding tickets.

Cameras like the ones on Riverdale Avenue may soon come to a halt if lawmakers fail to renew the program by July 25. 

Bronx leaders and community members say that is not acceptable.

"Lives are at stake, particularly the lives of kids," says Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz. "We should be doing everything we can to save lives."

Lawmakers are calling on Gov. Cuomo to reconvene the Senate for a vote to keep the program going. Joan Dean, who lost her 12-year-old grandson five years ago, says the cameras are important so that other kids don't lose their lives.

Opponents, however, say the cameras put in place starting in 2013 are just a government revenue stream.
