387ds agoA Massachusetts congressman visited the Bronx Wednesday to learn more about some of the organizations in the borough helping to feed New Yorkers.
Co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus Rep. Jim McGovern is hoping to continue work on hunger and food insecurity on a national scale, using what he learns from those doing similar work in the Bronx.
"When we talk about these issues, we have members of Congress who come to the table, who have no idea what the reality is," McGovern says. "They have a perception, but there's no reality."
He says families across the country have to make a decision every month about which bills they're going to pay to stay in their house and food.
McGovern spoke to members of Phipps Neighborhood and the Bronx Impact Food Access Collective.
He toured the neighborhood and discussed ideas.
"We have food, we have great restaurants, great hospitals, great housing developments," McGovern says. "We just got to connect the dots here and solve this."
The local groups say a federal level official visiting is huge.
McGovern also recent introduced a bill in the House to expand access to health school breakfasts for students across the country.
