Coalition for the Homeless calls on mayor, governor to address NYC homelessness
As the city’s subway system remains closed during certain overnight hours, the Coalition for the Homeless is stepping in on behalf of New Yorkers without a home.
According to the Coalition for the Homeless, more than 56,000 New Yorkers are currently residing in shelters.
The group sent a letter to both the mayor and the governor with several of its recommendations to help get people off the streets.
Giselle Routhier says the overnight closure of the subway system has highlighted the city’s homelessness issue.
She says the deployment of additional officers within the transit system to push the homeless into shelters is not the answer.
“That is not going to reduce the number of people sleeping on our streets,” said Routheir.
News 12 has reached out to the mayor and the governor and has not heard back yet.
