The woman who was named "Military Spouse of the Year" for the Coast Guard in 2024 is sharing her story on finding community with every move she makes.

Shawna McQuate says maintaining the feeling of "community" has always been a struggle because her husband is in active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard.

"What's unique about military spouses is that we become locals in a new community every two to three years," McQuate explains.

McQuate says thanks to the program "Coffee Connect," she can find a community everywhere her family moves.

The partnership between Blue Star families and Starbucks provides a coffee-side chat environment once a month for military families and spouses.

McQuate says without this community, moving would be a lot tougher.

"This makes it a lot easier when you have those friendships," she says.
