Activists in Kingsbridge have collected more than 400 signatures to keep the reservoirs in Jerome Park filled.
Neighbors say the reservoirs in the park have developed into historical landmarks over the years and also sets the scene for apartments overlooking the area.
"Well the reservoir is just the heart of this community," one activist says. "We have this cooling air in the summer, we have a wonderful breeze that comes over the reservoir."
The Department of Environment Protection (DEP) announced last month that they had plans to empty the north basin of the reservoir.
Community organizations worked with elected officials and residents in the area to ensure that that would not happen.
The DEP released a statement saying that they have heard the concerns of the community and will keep the reservoirs filled.
Activists are working with the DEP to ensure that the reservoirs are preserved moving forward.
