An alliance of community groups is holding meetings in protest of a planned jail in Hunts Point.
The 15 organizations worry that the $375 million, 2,000-bed jail will lessen the quality of life in the neighborhood. They want park space or a memorial, honoring the 1,000 New Yorkers who lost their lives in a steamship accident in the early 1900s, built at the abandoned freight yard.
Corrections officials say they have not made a final decision about where to build the jail.
