City Island residents are one step closer to solving an issue that’s plagued their ears for over 30 years.
A sound abatement construction project has started on the NYPD's firing range on Rodman's Neck.
Residents have complained about the noise issues for years.
Hearing gunshots and loud public announcements blare from across the water. Construction started in April 2025 to cover up the open-air firing range at 87% to reduce the noise. The 45th Precinct Community Council hosted a community meeting for residents on Monday night to speak with a representative from the Department of Design & Construction at Clipper Coffee on City Island.
Plans were shown and concerns were heard.
Traffic issues, environmental impacts, and utility costs were still at the top of mind for many City Islanders.
"Construction has started, but we all need to be working together to make sure the community's getting the most out of this project" shared Rodman's Neck Monitoring Committee Chair John Doyle.
Meetings like this will be held by the 45th Precinct Community Council regularly throughout the construction process. The project is scheduled to be completed by spring 2029.
