A community organization is making sure students in East New York have the resources they need to start the school year right.
One hundred students at Martin Luther King Park in East New York received free backpacks, and residents are coming together to celebrate the youth in the community.
This the first time the organization Tomorrow's Leaders NYC hosted the event.
It works with middle and high school students. Students who work with organization say it has helped them in their lives and academics, so they wanted to put this together to give back to their peers.
The organization gave away 100 backpacks with items students will need at school including PPE.
Throughout the day they provided free meals as well as youth programming, including several performances from the middle school and high school students.
Also available was important information on health care, schools and employment opportunities for the families of the young students.
"It’s been challenging, but I think that we have to change the narrative by just shining a positive light putting a smile on people’s faces; also being able to provide information that can help people out,” says founder Toyin Ayanfodun.
