Community showers Woodycrest Avenue fire survivors with money, support
Nearly a week after the fatal Woodycrest Avenue fire, community members continue to support survivors of the incident. On Wednesday, two local groups discussed plans to help the Magassa and Soumare families, who lost 10 family members in the blaze. Members of the local community board say they want to cut through red tape and get permanent housing for the survivors. Meanwhile, the South Bronx Board of Trade announced its own fundraiser. It plans to raise $10,000 for the survivors by April 11. With a number of funds being set up, many people want to make sure their donations end up in the right hands. Members of the South Bronx Board of Trade say they will only hand over a check to the family spokesperson or a family member. Mamadou Soumare, who is in the country illegally, won special permission Wednesday to return to the United States after burying his family in Africa.
