? A compost site in Soundview Park is taking away from the land instead of giving back, according to an advocacy group.
NYC Park Advocates says bags of leaves often litter the park and the green space has not been restored. The Department of Parks and Recreation gave the land to the Department of Sanitation to build the compost site, which recycles leaves as fertilizer for the park. The Department of Environmental Conservation then gave sanitation officials permits for the project in 2003.
The permits require sanitation to immediately remove bags from the site and the department was supposed to enhance 12 acres of the park within 180 days. Bronx residents say, three years later, they?re still waiting for sanitation to put money into a playground and other areas. Advocates say the other agencies have failed to oversee the site. They say if improvements aren?t made, they?ll sue the three departments.
