Twenty-four customers in Throgs Neck lost power due to Saturday's heavy rain storm, according to Con Edison.
Ariel Cabrera, who lives on the Throgs Neck Expressway, said the lights went out around 3p.m., which was not too long after the storm started.
"It was like a big boom, I thought it was a bomb, it sounded like one," he told News 12. "I went upstairs, made sure my wife was OK."
Con Ed workers on the scene confirmed that a transformer blew, which resulted in a power outage that impacted everyone on the block between Philip and Lafayette avenues.
"I was about to stay just home, but I have to go out and do something else because I can't stay inside - I can't even breathe in there, it's hot," said Cristian Adon, one of the people impacted.
Cabrera said that he had family coming over for dinner.
"I have to order out. My wife was going to cook, and so we have to spend a little more than we have to, and we're on a fixed income, but it is what it is," he said.
Neighbors said the Con Ed crews were able to get to the area pretty quickly. The workers said Saturday evening they should have the power back on before it got too late into the overnight.
"It could have been worse, but it's kind of annoying," Cabrera said.
Cabrera also handled things in stride.
"Go to the theatres and watch some movies and spend some time to see if they finish their work, and hopefully when we come back, it's already done," he said.
Con Ed's website only listed one other outage from the storm in The Bronx, which was in Allerton, and impacted just one customer.
