Con Edison is asking state regulators for approval to raise electric and gas delivery rates starting in 2026, sparking concerns among New York City residents who say they are already burdened by high living costs.
The utility company is proposing a $1.6 billion increase in electric delivery revenue, which would amount to a 17.9% rise in base electric delivery rates.
It’s also seeking an additional $349 million for natural gas delivery, a 15% hike.
Public hearings are underway as part of the New York State Public Service Commission's review process.
Brooklyn Borough Hall hosted a hearing to give residents a chance to voice their frustrations.
“Rents [are] already high. You have to pay for almost everything nowadays,” said Stephanie, a Gravesend resident. “You’re not living in an apartment where you don’t have to pay for heat and hot water. It’s just so annoying.”
If approved, the rate increases would go into effect in 2026.
Additional public hearings are scheduled for July 22 and 23 at varying locations.
