A backpack giveaway was held Saturday in Concourse Village to help out the community's kids as well as honor the legacy of a young athlete who was fatally shot.

More than 100 kids lined up to pick up the free backpacks and school supplies ahead of the school year.

The event was organized by Eve Hendricks, the mother of Brandon Hendricks, a Bronx basketball standout who was gunned down two years ago right after his high school graduation.

"It's a safe haven for our kids. We want to keep them out of trouble, we want to show them that we love them and care about them, and this is my son Brandon Hendricks' legacy," Eve Hendricks said.

Kids of all ages came by to grab a backpack and filled it with school supplies like notebooks, pencils and erasers.

Hendricks said she's fulfilling her son's mission to give back to the community.

"Since he's not here, I, as his mom, am keeping that promise," she said.

"This is what he expects, we're doing the work that Brandon has already inspired himself to do. So for us to do it, this is how we create his legacy to continue," said his best friend, Francisco Alfonte.

Hendricks also hopes that the event will help calm down the increasing gun violence that plagues the city.

"We don't have to go out there and murder each other senselessly. If you have a problem, talk to someone. Enough is enough, it's time to end gun violence," Hendricks said.

Hendricks continues to fight for her son's justice. The trial for his accused killer will take place later in September.
