Saturday marked the calm after the storm in Coney Island as sunny skies and cooler temperatures came in following the impacts from Tropical Depression Debby the day before.

Coney Island saw increased traffic on the boardwalk and on the beach. Residents made the most of the summer weather, with many swimming in the water after 6 p.m. This went on despite a lack of lifeguards and increased risk of rip currents throughout the day.

Those on the beach who chose to swim told News 12 they were unaware of the rip current risk. They added that more life guards and longer hours should be implemented.

"We definitely need more guards. There's still people in the water here like me and my kids and I'm their lifeguard right now. Without me, they wouldn't be able to be in the water," said Coney Island resident Ishamel Lopez.
