Construction crews in Kingsbridge celebrated the topping out of the new Fisher Houses, built to house families of veterans getting health at the medical center, free of charge.

Sixteen suite homes at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center will serve nearly 1,000 families when they’re finished in a year.

In just under two years, the Fisher Houses have been built from the ground up.

Erik Langhoff, James J. Peters VA Medical Center director, said, “It means a lot for our veterans and their families to come here and to be able to stay here and have their loved ones around them when they’re at the medical center.”

These will be the first Fisher Houses in New York City, joining 78 Fisher Houses built worldwide.

The project will cost about $13 million to build and will hope to be open next spring.
