A crane collapsed on top of a car at Jerome Avenue and Bedford Park Boulevard in the Bronx, police say. A truck was also struck by the crane, but it is unknown if anyone was in the vehicle at the time.
The FDNY says a boom broke off of a truck, fell onto a roadway and crushed a car at around 10:38 a.m. Surveillance video showed the crane bring down a traffic light and narrowly miss a pedestrian crossing the street.
The driver of the car that was crushed did survive, according to the FDNY Chief John Hodgens.
Crews from the city's Department of Buildings were on the scene to assess the damage. They say the truck was lifting metal rebar from a trailer onto a roof when the crane failed.
The Department of Buildings says the contractor is now facing a handful of violations after further inspection. The department also issued a partial work stop order that will only be lifted once the contractor addresses the violations. There is no damage to the building under construction.
All lanes of Bedford Park Boulevard from Grand Concourse to Jerome Avenue have been closed.
