Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced New York's plans to sue the federal government for not helping Puerto Rico with its hurricane recovery at the Heavenly Vision Christian Center on Jerome Avenue Sunday.
Cuomo spoke to a riled-up crowd, saying President Donald Trump and the government violated the Constitution by not providing the U.S. territory with "equal protection under law."
The call comes just about a year after Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit the island. It also comes days after Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello announced a new tally for the island’s death toll at 2,975. It originally was under 100.
Cuomo made his fifth recovery trip to Puerto Rico in July along with 600 college students who worked on rebuilding homes there.
In a report, FEMA admitted it was unprepared for the damage the hurricanes caused to Puerto Rico.
Cuomo says Puerto Rico received $6.2 million in the first nine days of Maria hitting Puerto Rico, compared to the first nine days of Hurricane Harvey hitting Houston where FEMA approved $141 million in assistance.
The governor also says Houston saw 30,000 emergency workers while Puerto Rico only saw 10,000 emergency workers in that same time span.
The announcement comes during the governor's quest for re-election.
