Cuomo fends off primary challenge from Nixon
Actress and activist Cynthia Nixon fell short in her challenge against Gov. Andrew Cuomo in Thursday's Democratic primary for governor, according to the AP.
The "Sex and the City" actress hoped progressive Democrat voters would topple Cuomo and defy polls that tabbed her opponent as the clear favorite.
Nixon focused on topics such as immigration reform, including wanting to make New York City a true sanctuary city.
She also spoke on criminal justice reform, calling for less people of color in the state's prison systems.
Nixon talked at length about legalizing recreational marijuana and fixing the transit system with a millionaire's tax and a polluter's fee.
Nixon campaigned with Jumaane Williams for lieutenant governor and Zephyr Teachout for New York attorney general.
