A father was arrested Friday after leaving his two kids locked inside a hot car on Barnes Avenue in Morris Park.
Police say Officer Robert Manley was alerted by a man banging on his window that the kids were trapped in the car. Manley radioed for assistance before breaking the driver's side window with an emergency hammer and unlocking the door.
A 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl were rescued from the car. They were unharmed.
Their father, 39-year-old Javed Shoaib, returned to his car and was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
According to
www.noheatstroke.org, so far in 2016 the total number of heatstroke deaths of children left in cars is 27, already higher than last year's total of 24.
