Danbury police need the public's help for information about a Sunday night shooting that killed an 18-year-old man.
Police say Yhameek Johnson was at the driveway of a home on Mill Ridge Road when an SUV drove by and someone inside opened fire.
One neighbor told News 12 that Johnson was walking up the street for a cookout for Father's Day.
"I was watching TV with my boyfriend and we heard the shooting, but I thought it was firecrackers," says resident Bernarda Diaz.
Police responded to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls for help around 8 p.m.
Mariela Lunetta, who lives across the street, told News 12 she took EMT courses, and when she saw Johnson bleeding on the ground, her training and her maternal instinct kicked in.
"My daughter started screaming at me, ‘Go, go,’ you know, and then as a mother's instinct, I just ran," Lunetta says.
She says she and another person did chest compressions before the ambulance arrived.
Johnson went to the hospital, but did not survive.
"Just to see somebody die right there and be able to hold them just before he died, it’s scary,” Lunetta says.
Diaz says the shooting is making her re-evaluate her safety. For the first time, she says she’s considering a security camera.
"Last night I could not sleep and I still...like am in shock. I couldn’t believe it. I’ve lived here for 27 years and I never saw things like that," Diaz says.
Police say they have not identified the shooter or the motive, but they believe the suspect’s car is a dark-colored SUV.
Anyone with information related to the incident can contact Danbury police at 203-790-TIPS or the assigned investigator at J.Williams@danbury-ct.gov.
