News 12 sat down with Danielle Herbert-Guggenheim, who’s running for City Council in District 11. This is the lifelong educator’s first time running for public office.
She told News 12 that her background in education and teaching children with special needs has helped her gain perspective into the homes of working families.
She hopes to bring resources to schools, like improved medical care and gardens to promote healthy eating.
When asked why she decided to make the switch from educating to politics, Herbert-Guggenheim said, "I didn't come to this decision lightly. I prayed on it and I thought about it. I waited to see what was going to happen within District 11. And things have not gotten better for the average working family."
She wants to address quality-of-life issues, like trash on the streets, drag racing and loud music that disrupts neighbors.
When asked why people should vote for her instead of her opponent, she said, "Because I show up, I listen, I respond. I am on the ground not for photo ops, but because I truly care and I understand what it takes to turn things around. Consistency and commitment."
Herbert-Guggenheim is running against the incumbent, Council Member Eric Dinowitz. Early voting begins June 14 and the primary is June 24.
