Days after storm, Brooklyn seniors still struggle to dig out cars

Two days after the major snowstorm that blanketed the city, many New Yorkers are still battling to clear their cars from piles of snow.
At 84 years old, Joyce is no stranger to Brooklyn winters, but this storm brought a new challenge: more snow plows.
She says that while she was pleased with the city’s response to the storm, the increased snow plowing operation, left her car, and those on her street, buried and a large pile blocking her driveway.
“I mean, it’s crazy! We never had this before, and I’ve lived here over 21 years,” she said.
“It’s a very good thing,” a neighbor said about the more frequent plowing. “But you have to come out and shovel every 10 minutes,” he said.
Joyce paid neighbors to dig her car out after the first round of plowing, but when the plows returned this morning, her car was stuck again.
That’s when a Department of Sanitation worker stepped in to help. Although her street wasn’t on his route, he still went out of his way to dig her car out with a shovel.
He then drove his truck on her street and cleared the snow in front of her house and driveway.
Joyce was extremely grateful. “I can’t believe they did the whole thing! Fantastic! I thank Channel 12 News, I thank Sanitation,” she said.
