Some Bronx students are starting their first day of school this Monday morning. For others, there's still a few weeks left, but the Department of Education is saying how parents use that time between now and the first day is crucial.
At Kipp Academy Middle School, students will be arriving for their first day of the new school year. As for New York City Public School students, there's still a few weeks until children reenter the classroom.
Ahead of that first day, Monday is a deadline you need to know about. The Department of Education says students ages 12 and up need to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine today in order for them to be fully protected against the coronavirus by the first day.
The DOE launched its $1.3 million "Vax to School" campaign to encourage younger people to get vaccinated. Aug. 9 is the last day for students to start their two dose Pfizer vaccine and be fully vaccinated by Sept. 13.
If you wait, your student will only be partially vaccinated by the first day. The COVID-19 vaccine is not mandatory for students or school staff members at this point. However, Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter says vaccines are key to keeping the community and children safe.
NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi says the vaccine is key.
"Our schools' layered approach to safety has kept kids healthy," says Dr. Chokshi. "And there is nothing more protective than vaccination. Getting vaccinated now protects you, your classmates, your families and the entire school community."
