(06/14/06) FORDHAM ? Parents and HIV/AIDS activists demonstrated in front of Belmont Preparatory School Wednesday to protest the supposed treatment of a student.
According to demonstrators, school officials have not acted to stop the harassment of an HIV-positive student. Sixteen-year-old Raven Lopez was born with HIV, and says she?s been harassed for years by other students. Lopez?s mother claims she?s told administrators about the problem, but nothing?s been done.
AIDS activists say the problem at Belmont Prep is just a microcosm of misunderstanding all over New York City schools. Belmont Prep officials say they just recently found out about the harassment accusations. An assistant to the principal says a meeting will be scheduled with Lopez?s mother.
