The Mayor's Office to End Domestic and Gender-based Violence and the Denim Day NYC Committee hosted Denim Day NYC 2023 today.
Today is the 24th annual observance of Denim Day, a day created to raise awareness about all forms of sexual violence.
The campaign started back in 1999 in response to an Italian supreme court decision to overturn a rape conviction because the victim was wearing jeans - the court ruled the jeans were too tight and that the victim had to help her attacker pull down the jeans.
People are encouraged to wear denim to combat victim blaming and to spread the message that there's no reason for sexual assault, including the type of clothes a person wears.
The Brooklyn event began with a brief opening ceremony for survivors and advocates at Brooklyn Borough Hall at 10 a.m. Survivors of sexual assault shared their stories, listened to remarks from the Brooklyn district attorney and participated in a fashion show.
Attendees marched over the Brooklyn Bridge to rally against sexual violence in Manhattan's Foley Square.
