People in Throgs Neck packed into Herbert H. Lehman High School on Thursday to learn how to protect their homes and businesses from Mother Nature.
In an informational session held by the Department of Environmental Protection, people were taught about the different types of flooding, and how to use emergency equipment like sump pumps.
"It's only going to get worse, and the reality is that the climate is changing faster than our infrastructure can keep up. So part of what we did tonight was explain how our infrastructure works, why people are experiencing flooding, how climate change gets into that," said Rohit Aggarwala, commissioner of the Department of Enviornmental Protection.
After the meeting, emergency kits that included sump pumps, flood alarm sensors and toilet plugs were passed out.
Robert Morales was one of nearly 250 people who got online to get an emergency flood kit.
"We got hit really hard a couple of years ago by Hurricane Ida, so once I heard about this, I figured I had to come in and find out how we can protect ourselves, talk to our neighbors and see what we could do about the flooding situation," said Morales.
It comes on the heels of record-setting rainfall that flooded major roadways and left cars stalled across the Bronx on Tuesday.
