Sidewalk trash bins in the Bronx will soon be receiving a makeover in the hope of reducing litter.
The Department of Sanitation is looking to toss the city's old bins as a part of the "Better Bin" competition. The two prototype garbage cans would reduce litter, prevent rodents from getting in and allow sanitation workers to do their jobs faster.
The design competition re-imagines the ubiquitous New York litter basket, which has mostly stayed the same since the 1930s, in the hope of innovating a product that improves city life.
The prototypes are being tested for about a month before a panel of judges will determine the winner. The announcement of the winner is expected this month.
