The Department of Sanitation’s new rules for trash in New York City went into effect on Friday morning.

All businesses in the Bronx are now required to use a lidded container to dispose of their garbage.

The new rules aim to keep the city clean and rat free.

DSNY says the first phase of the plan was rolled out last summer starting with food-based businesses.

Since then, New York City has seen a 6% decline in rat sightings, a 16% decline in rat mitigation zones and 68% decline in its residential containerization pilot zone.

Friday marks the second phase in a multipart roll out of the new trash plan. The commissioner of DSNY says it has mostly been a success.
