Hundreds of backpacks were distributed in Brooklyn on Tuesday in honor of two fallen NYPD officers who were killed in Bed-Stuy back in 2014.
The celebration began with the NYPD marching band followed by a backpack giveaway from the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation to students from P.S. 307 and P.S. 287.
"We want to honor these two great men Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, but we also want to follow their amazing example of giving back to their community," says JW Cortes, of the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation.
The students had the chance to spend the day with both the four-legged and regular officers from their neighborhood.
"Just seeing the smiles, they look like they're having a good time jumping around laughing. so that brings joy to my life," says Martiza Ramos, of the Detective Rafael Ramos Foundation.
This year marks the foundation’s sixth annual backpack giveaway.
