Disbarred Brooklyn attorney sentenced to prison in major deed theft case
A disbarred attorney is going to prison in a notorious deed theft case.
A disbarred attorney at the center of one of Brooklyn's most notorious deed theft schemes was sentenced Wednesday to two and a half to seven years in prison.
Sanford Solny, who prosecutors say stole the deeds to a dozen properties across Brooklyn, appeared before a packed courtroom.
Dozens of Solny's supporters, victims and advocates crowded the courthouse.
Inside, several victims were visibly upset when the judge did not allow them to address Solny directly.
Instead, prosecutors read their statements, describing years of emotional, financial and health struggles caused by the scheme.
Solny was allowed to speak, he thanked his family, friends and attorneys but offered no apology or remarks to the victims.
In addition to the prison term, the judge fined Solny’s companies $120,000. He also nullified the deeds, effectively canceling the fraudulent transactions.
Victims were hoping for restitution, saying Solny collected rent from their homes for years. But the judge denied that request.
For many of them, the fight isn’t over. Some victims are still battling to regain control of their properties.
Solny also faces a separate court case in Queens.
