What we see as a celebration is not essentially the same for our pets.

Dr. Whitney Miller, the chief veterinarian at Petco, says more pets go missing of July 4 than any other day of the year.

She says things like shaking, hiding or their fur standing up could be a sign they are feeling nervous. She recommends leaving pets at home for the holiday. She says how you can keep them comfortable while your away by leaving the TV on or a noise machine. Also, by leaving them with things they enjoy like chew toys.

If you plan to bring your pet to the festivities, Dr. Miller recommends:

  • Putting them on a leash

  • Comforting them as much as possible

  • Not feeding them human food

  • Microchip them in case they get away

She says preparation is key.
