July is Fibroid Awareness Month, and doctors are working to raise awareness around the common disease that impacts millions of women.
Fibroids are benign tumors that can grow in and around the uterus. Their impact can be debilitating for women who are living with uterine fibroids. Some symptoms include heavy bleeding, anemia and chronic abdominal pain.
"If they are noticing they are getting a lot of unwanted and unexpected period problems, that is a clue to maybe get screened for it," said Dr. Yachao Zhang, at the USA Vein Clinics on Fordham Road.

Dr. Yan Katsnelson is the Founder of the USA Fibroids Center. He says their is a solution to improve the quality of life for women who are living with fibroids.
"The minimal invasive treatment that can be done in the clinic, without need for any surgeries, and woman can have a baby after that, it's called uterine fibroid embolization, it takes 30 to 40 minutes in the clinic, an hour later or two hours later women can go home, and it's covered by most insurances, there is no need to suffer in silence," said Dr. Katsnelson.
The Fibroid Fighters Foundation will be hosting its annual awareness event this Thursday in Times Square to bring awareness, education and provide resources for those living with fibroids.
