A Bronx woman was reunited with her lost dog after it had gone missing for three years.
Maria Gonzales was reunited with her red-nosed pit bull Rihanna in February.
She says in 2013 she was outside of her house playing with her three dogs in Crotona Park East, when just for a second, she went inside her home to get bags to pick up after her dogs. Gonzales says that's when someone stole Rihanna, who was only a small puppy at the time.
"I have no idea, whoever had stolen her from here, they had her and they probably couldn't take care of her anymore," Gonzales says.
Even though Rihanna was micro-chipped, Gonzales says she could not be traced right away. But three years later when Rihanna was picked up at an animal shelter in New Jersey, volunteers at the shelter thought she may have a microchip inside her so when they scanned her, Gonzales' owener information came up. On Feb. 20, volunteers from the shelter drove the dog back to the Bronx where owner and pup were reunited.
"Oh my God, it was so beautiful. It was nothing I ever would have imagined, getting her back; she was fine, she was healthy, like she is now."
