The Dominican Day Parade is another large gathering that was canceled this year due to COVID-19 regulations, but the party is not stopping entirely.
Organizers are still giving scholarships to Latino students during a virtual event.
The scholarship is open to incoming college freshmen and undergrad and graduate students. Almost 400 students applied this year and it is down to 39 finalists.
As part of the application process, students had to explain how COVID-19 impacted their lives.
Scholarships range between $1,000 to $10,000. There is a minimum of $100,000 total that will be given out.
The winners will be announced Sunday during the parade, which is free to watch – but donations are encouraged. Tickets are available online.
