Some community members say they're not thrilled about the city Department of Transportation's plan to alter the traffic pattern on Morris Park Avenue.

At a Community Board 11 meeting Monday night at Einstein College of Medicine, members of the board’s transportation committee said they were not on board with the plan.

The DOT's plan would add just under 1.5 miles of bike lanes on Morris Park Avenue, which runs through the Morris Park and Van Nest neighborhoods. It would also add turning lanes and high-visibility crosswalks while removing what the DOT says is a low-volume travel lane.

The DOT says the changes will improve safety, citing fatalities and collisions that occurred between 2010 and 2014.

Residents at Monday's meeting said they care about safety but are worried about traffic flow and that they want the agency to find another way to remedy the issue.

"Morris Park Avenue is a Vision Zero priority corridor with 7.6 pedestrians killed or severely injured per mile," a DOT spokesperson said in a statement. "Safety improvements here would include organizing traffic, reducing speeding, creating safer turns and enhancing pedestrian visibility."

If the DOT doesn't change course, residents say they would hold a town hall meeting with the intention of squashing the DOT's plan.
