The Department of Transportation has proposed a pedestrian median at Jackson and Westchester avenues in Melrose.
The DOT says the dedicated median will make getting on the Bx4 bus easier for commuters and will keep them safe from oncoming traffic.
Many residents say that the project is long overdue because the intersection can be dangerous.
The DOT said in a statement that the median is one of many street-improvement projects slated for the Bronx.
Construction of the new sidewalk is expected to begin early this week, according to the agency.
