A fire at a Williamsbridge apartment building has left dozens of families without a home Friday morning.
Over 200 firefighters descended on the building at 4055 Carpenter Ave. Thursday night. Though things were much quieter early Friday, some officers and a fire truck were still there.
Fire officials said the blaze quickly spread through the fifth floor in the space between the ceiling and the roof, and then the adjoining building.
At last one resident and three firefighters were injured, officials said, but none were considered life-threatening.
The Department of Buildings found a lot of structural damage caused by the fire, including a partially collapsed roof and unstable interior walls. A vacate order was issued for over 50 apartments as a result.
The building remained empty Friday afternoon, with some residents waiting outside for answers as to when they might get back in.
Multiple residents told News 12 they didn’t even know the building was on fire.
“We didn't know. When we came out, the firefighters were already in the building,” said one resident. “How would you let the firefighters know that there is fire in the building, meanwhile the people living in the building themselves don't even know there is fire in the building?”
The Red Cross is on the scene lending a hand to all of the displaced families looking to pick up the pieces.
