Saturday marked the final day of Earth Month, and one event found a creative way to be environmentally friendly.
Brooklyn residents took part in the “Recycle the Runway” event at Kings Plaza Mall. Each of the three contestants from the area were given a pile of reused and recycled materials like coffee filters, magazines, newspapers and masks and were tasked with making a custom dress.
After the dresses were put together, five judges from industries like fashion, sustainability and advertising chose the top dress, with the winner taking home $1000.
The fashion show’s winner, Rita, says she’ll be investing the money in her company, One Piece Wear, which makes jumpsuits with a focus on sustainability.
